A Mother’s Day Gift

On Mother’s Day, shortly before Mom passed away at the age of 95, I walked into what I thought was a Mother’s Day celebration. Instead, my family surprised me with a celebration for my 70th birthday.

During the gathering, Mom looked at me and said,

“My baby.”

When my brother asked, “Which baby?”

Mom replied,

“My first baby.”

After years of Alzheimer’s, that moment was an unexpected gift. For a brief moment, she knew exactly who I was.

It remains one of the most treasured memories of my life.
